FAQ on India Green Party
When was the party formally founded?
The party came into formal existence as India Greens on 18 November 2018 when around 300 people from so many states took part in the founding national convention in New Delhi on 17 & 18 November 2018. On the concluding day of the convention on 18 November 2018 the convention proposed, endorsed and adopted the new party’s constitution including preamble, objective and principles, and policies. The convention also elected a national executive of the party. After this, the party applied for its registration with the Election Commission of India (ECI).
How the India Green Party (iGP) came into existence?
The idea about the India Greens was initiated on 2 July 2017 when more than 44 social and political activists, journalists and other people from 17 states and union territories of India were part of a meeting in New Delhi. Everybody was of the view that India needed a Green party that worked at the national level.
What about the future expansion of iGP work in India?
The iGP leadership is very hopeful about the vertical, horizontal and exponential expansion of the party in the near future. Green Politics will be the only politics to reckon with in the future because there will be no place for the run-of-the-mill politics in India or elsewhere. In fact, there has to be a paradigm shift in politics and only Green Politics can do that.
How is the progress of green party in India and its works?
Several people over the years have tried on this. Some of us also tried in the past to build a national Green party. However, nothing could be realised as there was no action on the ground. Today, there are hundreds of civil society organisations and actors who keep talking about Greenism but hardly come forth to practice Green Politics and Ideology. Their NGO interests do not allow them to get politically active. In fact, we require thinking beyond such interests. In a nutshell, Green Politics is progressing in India slowly and steadily.
Is iGP a recognised Indian political party?
No, iGP is not a recognised Indian political party. To get the status of a recognised political party in India, a party has to win a certain number of seats and certain percentage of votes in the elections to the Lok Sabha (Lower House of National Parliament) or to the State Assemblies. The iGP has not contested any election so far; hence, no question of getting recognition from the ECI.
